Remineralization Starts With Minerals

Calcium & phosphate are the foundation, no matter where you stand on fluoride.

There has been a lot of debate lately about fluoride vs. remineralization, but I think we’re missing one of the most important points!

Remineralization doesn’t happen from fluoride alone. It depends on calcium and phosphate—the primary minerals that make up enamel.

Fluoride works within this mineral matrix! It helps strengthen the structure when those minerals are present, but it doesn’t replace them.

Too often, fluoride is talked about as if it rebuilds teeth by itself, but remineralization is fundamentally a mineral-driven process. Without adequate calcium and phosphate, fluoride has little to work with. That’s why mineral availability is essential, regardless of whether fluoride is part of the equation.

So if you choose to use fluoride, that is absolutely your right. But I wouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to minerals. Minerals aren’t the alternative to fluoride; they are the foundation that makes remineralization possible in the first place.

Because fluoride works within a mineral environment,  supporting mineral availability is still incredibly important. Whether you choose fluoride or not,  abundant minerals—both in the mouth and throughout the body—are one of the most important foundations for remineralization.

If lit doesn’t make sense to abandon remineralization strategies simply because you’ve chosen to use fluoride. If anything, it gives fluoride more of the environment it needs to do its job.

And if you choose not to use fluoride, that is also a completely valid choice!

There is no question that fluoride is a powerful substance. In Ayurveda nothing is inherently good or bad, but good or bad only relative to the circumstances. Strong substances have potential to support great healing or to inflict great harm; like a knife that can cut but can also remove a tumor.

It’s also worth noting that cultures around the world have maintained healthy, functional teeth for generations without brushing with fluoride. Researchers like Weston Price documented populations with remarkably healthy teeth despite having no access to modern dental products.
